Dr. Peter Wessels said that his approach to ED treatment is different than many people who have tried other medications. “I’m trying to help my patients with erectile dysfunction. And, I have some patients who are on a long-term treatment for ED who don’t have any symptoms of ED. They don’t want to go to a pill split. They want to use a pill. And when you’re on Viagra for a year, you can get some relief. But, if you take the pill and then you start to suffer from erectile dysfunction, then the blood flow may drop again,” he said.
The pills, he said, work differently for each patient. “If you take Viagra, you take it for three months and then you’re on it for a year. If you take it for four months, you take it for a year, then you’re on it for three years, then you’re off it for one year, then you’re off it for a year.”
But Dr. Peter Wessels said the pill may be the better option for some men with a low desire for sex. He said some men are also going to be able to get a good erection without sexual stimulation.
“If you want to be sexually active for a couple of months and then get that erection again, you might not want to go off of the pill. But, if you want to be sexual with your partner, you might want to use Viagra,” Wessels said.
He added that he would not recommend using Viagra for erectile dysfunction unless his patients were willing to try it.
